In my Italian conversation book was a character who came from Liguria. He wanted to become one of the building facade artists like his uncle but lacked the talent. Instead, he became interested in computers and managed his uncle's accounts. At the time, I thought there wouldn't have been much work for him to manage. After all, how many buildings would require such painting? Well, now that I've been to Liguria, the answer is "a lot"! Above is a closeup of the brush strokes used to create the feeling of depth on the wall below.
Some facades (sorry, it's just too hard to insert the diacritical marks into this blog) are very ornate.
Others are plain. Still, the artist painted shadows on the right side of the window trim below.
In the picture below, the middle window is a complete fraud!
It is a most labor-intensive endeavor, and with the sea air, probably one that has to be redone rather frequently. Still, it's one of the charming features of this part of Italy.
This ends our sojourn in Italy. Next stop: the U.K.
