20. Neal's Cafe

Americana still exists and Neal's Cafe in Springdale is proof of that!

This restaurant has been in business since 1944. In New Jersey this restaurant would be called a diner. It serves homemade food just like mom used to make.

The decor is, well, unique. Pink cinder block meets the wild west.

There are lots of things on the pink cinder block walls.

There's nothing like a dead animal hanging from the wall watching you eat.

Where the demographics of Fayetteville consist of college students, hippies, and professionals, this cafe in Springdale caters to good ol' country boys. This man looks like he spent most of his life on a farm.

Now this is what I call a "blue plate special." My dinner consisted of fried chicken livers, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans cooked with bacon, and coleslaw. I think tonight's dinner has undone my year-long diet!

Here's Roberta's catfish dinner.

Robbie had beef.

Homemade yeast rolls and cornbread. The brown plastic basket reminds me of my childhood.

Robbie and Roberta each had a slice of pie. This was Robbie's peanut butter pie with meringue.

This tabletop has more than 1000 pennies. In the center are Indian head pennies. I didn't know the U.S. minted anything like that.

More pies. I like the juxtaposition of the pies against the blue cleaning fluid. Nice touch.

You won't miss Neal's Cafe from the street. It's pink, too!

If you haven't been, you owe it to yourself to visit Neal's Cafe. There aren't a lot of places like this left in America.
