This was a very lazy day, and as you can see from my selection of photos, a very random one.
Bill spent the morning working on his MLA article; meanwhile, I worked on the earlier blog entries. We grabbed a late-morning coffee and returned to the Center. I caught up on "American" news by watching video clips from "The Daily Show" and "Letterman." We returned home for lunch and then made our way to Trastevere.
The first photo is taken of the trees that line the Lungotevere, the inbound and outbound boulevards that flank either side of the Tiber ("Tevere") River.
The next image was shot in Trastevere. "Graffiare" in Italian means to scratch. There's a little bit of scratching and a lot of paint. The graffiti is kind of cute but its message is rather ominous.
Next, there's an image of a fire truck. The idea of fires "in centro" (downtown where we live) is scary. When we were here three years ago, there was a fire extinguisher on every landing and in every room. Note that the ladder on this very small truck is made of wood...hmmmm.
OK, so a picture of a garbage truck is really pretty stupid to include. However, this shot was taken at the Campo de' fiori. Every day the merchants set up their stands and every day people come to clean up the mess left at the market. Day after day, month after month, year after year, and so on. Romans take a lot of effort to keep their city clean--they really do.
Finally, there's a shot of the books in our apartment. Bill was killing time and found a 663 page book on the theory of orgasm. No comment. What's odd is that a few books to the right is "The Illustrated Life of St. Francis" followed by "I'm OK, You're OK" ("Io sono OK, tu sei OK"). Odd, don't you think?
